The UMA, founded in 1972, develops its activities in accordance with its basic functions of creation and transmission of knowledge, preparation for the exercise of professional activities, promotion of culture and sports and contribution to social welfare. The academic institution has more than 37,000 students, more than 2,700 professors and 2 university campuses that include the three schools of industrial engineering, telecommunications and computer science, with their corresponding undergraduate and graduate degrees. It also has 309 R+D+i groups and 23 research institutes.

In 2024 the University of Malaga has obtained the largest Spanish funding for the implementation of the Chip University-Business Chair Malaga Microelectronics, within the framework of the call for aid from the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Digital Transformation aimed at financing, with funds from the European Recovery and Resilience Mechanism, the creation of University-Business Chairs in the period 2023-2027 whose activity is focused on research, dissemination and training in different areas of application of microelectronics. This Chair will work in the fields of photonics, analog and digital involving a total of 13 technology companies.

In this project, the UMA goes hand in hand with Innova IRV, Malaga Tech Park and the other institutions that have supported the choice of Malaga to host a headquarters of IMEC (Interuniversity Microelectronics Centre), a world leader in semiconductors.
