The Spanish Semiconductor Industry Association (AESEMI) welcomes the International Iberian Nanotechnology Laboratory as a new member of the association. With this addition, the national microelectronics and semiconductor ecosystem is strengthened by a leading international research organisation dedicated to nanoscience and nanotechnology, a strategic field for the development of advanced technologies that complement the semiconductor sector.
Established under an international agreement between the governments of Spain and Portugal, the International Iberian Nanotechnology Laboratory (INL) is an intergovernmental organisation based in Braga (northern Portugal) that carries out cutting-edge interdisciplinary research and deploys nanotechnology-based technologies for the benefit of society. Officially founded following joint ratification in 2005 and fully operational since 2009, INL has established itself as a leading laboratory in applied nanoscience research, with significant international involvement and collaborations with academic centres, industry and public organisations.
The INL focuses its scientific and technological activities on strategic areas that are essential for the development of new technological solutions, such as nanoelectronics and device engineering, nanomedicine, advanced materials, food security and nutrition, sustainable energy, and quantum technologies. Its research has a direct impact on global challenges such as health, the environment, clean energy and food security, contributing to the achievement of the UN Sustainable Development Goals. With world-class facilities and a highly qualified scientific community of researchers, engineers and technicians from many countries, INL promotes both scientific excellence and technology transfer to industry.
Among its key capabilities are specialised laboratories, micro- and nanofabrication facilities, advanced characterisation platforms, and collaborative research projects addressing challenges in fields such as nanomedicine, energy, emerging materials and smart systems. INL’s participation in European and global initiatives and its focus on technological innovation make it a strategic partner within the semiconductor and microelectronics ecosystem, facilitating synergies between high-level scientific research and future industrial applications.
INL brings to the semiconductor ecosystem its expertise in cutting-edge nanoscience research, its state-of-the-art experimental infrastructure, and its international network of collaborators. Its international scope, multidisciplinary approach and commitment to innovation and technology transfer position it as a key partner for companies and organisations seeking advanced technological solutions in sectors where semiconductors and nanomaterials play a crucial role.
AESEMI, for its part, was founded in 2021 and represents the leading Spanish companies specialising in microelectronic design and semiconductor manufacturing. One of its key objectives is to raise the profile of all the organisations that form part of Spain’s semiconductor technology ecosystem. Thanks to this platform, the growth of the domestic industry is being driven forward and large companies are being provided with access to solutions that contribute to global decarbonisation and digitalisation commitments, which are fundamental pillars of the country’s technological competitiveness.
