The Spanish Semiconductor Industry Association (AESEMI) welcomes the Eurecat technology centre as a new member of the association. With this addition, the national microelectronics and semiconductor ecosystem is strengthened by one of Europe’s leading technology centres, specialising in applied research, technology transfer and innovation to boost business competitiveness and social welfare through advanced technological solutions.
Eurecat plays a key role in the field of semiconductors, focusing on applied research, technological development and specialist training. Its contribution to the sector is based on its ability to generate and transform knowledge into innovative solutions that address current challenges, such as the need for miniaturisation, functional integration, sustainability and new capabilities in electronic systems, contributing to the development of high-impact applications in the field of integrated circuits for strategic sectors such as healthcare, the automotive industry, textiles and sport.
Furthermore, its advanced infrastructure and laboratories enable the development of innovative solutions and accelerate technology transfer to industry, thereby reducing risks and optimising business innovation processes. Among these facilities, Eurecat’s Plastrónica pilot plant, located in Cerdanyola del Vallès and a pioneer at European level, stands out. This facility brings significant value to the field of chips and advanced electronic systems, as it combines functional printing and the hybridisation of electronic components with more traditional manufacturing processes, such as injection moulding, to produce lightweight devices with new functionalities integrated into parts with complex geometries.
Eurecat thus provides a specialised environment for the development, prototyping and integration of solutions that bring together microelectronics, advanced materials and printed electronics. This infrastructure enables the exploration of new ways of incorporating chips, sensors and electronic functions onto unconventional surfaces and substrates, thereby facilitating the development of lighter, more integrated devices tailored to high value-added applications.
In the field of chip manufacturing, Eurecat is part of the FabCat initiative, alongside Catalan universities, research centres, technology centres and other stakeholders in the ecosystem, with the aim of promoting Catalonia’s position as a location for future semiconductor factories within the European Union. It also participates in initiatives aimed at strengthening the sector’s capabilities and talent, particularly in the fields of microelectronics and nanoelectronics, to meet the demand for qualified personnel in the semiconductor industry through continuing professional development, master’s programmes, industrial PhDs and activities supporting research and innovation.
Since its establishment in 2021, AESEMI has served as a leading body for the Spanish semiconductor industry, bringing together more than 100 companies and organisations from the sector. Its work focuses on fostering collaboration, strengthening competitiveness and raising the profile of the national microelectronics ecosystem as a whole, thereby enhancing its strategic positioning at both European and international levels.
