The University of Zaragoza joins AESEMI

The Spanish Semiconductor Industry Association (AESEMI) welcomes the University of Zaragoza as a new member of the association. With this addition, the national microelectronics and semiconductor ecosystem is strengthened by a leading academic institution in scientific and technological research, with extensive experience in engineering, nanoscience and the development of advanced technologies.

Founded in 1474 and headquartered in Zaragoza, the University of Zaragoza is a public university that combines teaching, research and knowledge transfer activities. It has solid capabilities in areas such as electronic engineering, photonics, advanced materials, artificial intelligence and nanoscience, which are key areas for the development of the semiconductor and microelectronics sector.

The institution stands out for its intense research activity through centres and structures of excellence such as the Aragón Engineering Research Institute (I3A) and the Aragón Institute of Nanoscience and Materials (INMA, a joint CSIC-UNIZAR centre), the latter dedicated to the development and processing of micro- and nanoscale structures and their industrial applications. These centres bring together multidisciplinary teams from physics, chemistry, engineering, biomedicine and other disciplines, and collaborate with companies and international organisations on high-impact R&D&I projects.

Its technological capabilities include research in microelectronics, power electronics, digital systems, photonics and advanced industrial technologies, developed by specialised groups working on applications for sectors such as energy, industry, communications and biomedicine. The university also ranks highly in international rankings in areas such as robotics, computer vision and biomedical engineering, reflecting its scientific and technological impact.

The University of Zaragoza contributes its expertise in applied research, talent training and technology transfer to the semiconductor ecosystem, establishing itself as a strategic partner. Its capacity to generate knowledge, develop emerging technologies and collaborate with companies on high added-value projects makes it a key player within the national ecosystem. With an extensive international collaboration network and participation in European research programmes, the University of Zaragoza also contributes to strengthening the global dimension of the Spanish microelectronics and semiconductor ecosystem.

AESEMI, meanwhile, was founded in 2021 and represents the leading Spanish companies engaged in microelectronic design and semiconductor manufacturing. One of its main objectives is to raise the profile of all the entities that form part of the semiconductor technology ecosystem in Spain. Thanks to this platform, the growth of the national industry is promoted and large companies are provided with access to solutions that contribute to global decarbonisation and digitalisation commitments, fundamental pillars for the country’s technological competitiveness.
