The Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (UPM) is the oldest and largest of the Spanish technical universities, with around 3,500 teaching staff, around 37,000 undergraduate students and 6,700 postgraduates in 21 Schools and Faculties, covering most engineering disciplines, as well as Architecture, Computer Science and Geodesy and Cartography. On the other hand, the UPM, as a high quality academic system, has a strong commitment to R+D+i. It has more than 200 research groups and 19 Research Centres and Institutes, contributing significantly to the international scientific community with a large number of scientific articles, conference papers and doctoral theses. The UPM has a long tradition of collaboration with industry (around 50% of its R&D funding) and participation in international R&D programmes. In this sense, the UPM has been recognised as the first Spanish university to participate in the European Union Framework Programme since 2007.
The Institute of Optoelectronic Systems and Microtechnology (ISOM) is a university research institute attached to the Polytechnic University of Madrid (UPM), created on 16 March 2000 (BOCM of 28-3-2000) from an initial proposal of several research groups belonging to the Departments of Electronic Engineering, Photonic Technology, Physics Applied to Information Technologies and Physics Applied to Architecture, Urban Planning and the Environment.
El ISOM tiene sus instalaciones en la planta baja del edificio López Araujo de la Escuela Técnica Superior de Ingenieros de Telecomunicación de la UPM. It consists of 400 m2 of clean rooms, 300 m2 of characterisation laboratories with centralised air conditioning, and 200 m2 of instrumentation and electronics laboratories. The facilities include a room for Industrial Cooperation and Technology Transfer, and an office for the management of External Services. ISOM employs a team of 30 researchers, 1 engineer from the Technology Centre, 4 technicians and 1 administrative staff. This is a group with sufficient critical mass, whose research work has been consolidating over the last few years. In particular, the groups that form it have participated in numerous research projects financed by the European Union.
