The Catalan Institute of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology (ICN2), a Catalan research institute specialising in nanoscience and nanotechnology, has joined the Spanish Semiconductor Industry Association (AESEMI) as a member. This move strengthens the network of technological collaboration and helps to bolster the industrial and innovation ecosystem in Spain and Europe.
Founded in 2003 as the Institut Català de Nanotecnologia and renamed in 2013 to its current name, the ICN2 is a non-profit public research institute located on the campus of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB). It is sponsored by the Government of Catalonia, the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) and the UAB itself, and has been accredited as a Severo Ochoa Centre of Excellence.
The institute focuses its activities on generating knowledge, materials and devices in the fields of ICT, health, energy and the environment, exploring the new properties that emerge from the behaviour of matter at the nanoscale. Its work combines basic and applied research, the training of new generations of researchers, and active collaboration with local and international industry. The centre currently brings together around twenty research groups working in a multidisciplinary manner at the intersection of physics, chemistry, biology and engineering.
As a founding member of the Barcelona Institute of Science and Technology (BIST) and the European Graphene Flagship, ICN2 is positioned as a strategic partner in the development of knowledge and technology at the nanoscale. Its membership of AESEMI reinforces its commitment to collaboration within the technology ecosystem and to promoting initiatives that contribute to industrial development and the sector’s competitiveness in Spain.
Since its creation in 2021, AESEMI has served as a leading organisation for the Spanish semiconductor industry, bringing together more than 100 companies and organisations from the sector. Its work focuses on fostering collaboration, strengthening competitiveness and raising the profile of the national microelectronics ecosystem as a whole, whilst promoting its strategic positioning at both European and international levels.
