The Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias (IAC) will add its experience and expertise to the Spanish Semiconductor Association (AESEMI). The association thus continues to bring together the pieces of the Spanish semiconductor ecosystem, a task that will facilitate collaborations and synergies.
The IAC, accredited by the Spanish Government as a “Severo Ochoa Centre of Excellence”, is a Spanish public research organisation that manages two of the best astronomical observatories in the world. Administratively, it is a Public Consortium, integrated by the General Administration of the Spanish State, the Public Administration of the Autonomous Community of the Canary Islands, the University of La Laguna (ULL) and the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC).
The Observatories of the Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias – the Observatorio del Teide (Tenerife), and the Observatorio del Roque de los Muchachos (La Palma) – are located in two of the most privileged places for astronomical observations.
The IAC instrumentation area has long experience in the design of semiconductors for ground-based and on-board astrophysical observation instruments. In its design laboratory, the specifications of the microelectronic components present in telescopes installed both in the Canary Island Observatories of Teide and Roque de los Muchachos and in those of other international observatories have been developed. It has also participated in the development of on-board instruments with ESA, NASA and JAXA.
