The University of the Basque Country, new member of AESEMI

The University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU) will add its experience and knowledge to the Spanish Semiconductor Industry Association.

The University of the Basque Country has signed an agreement with the Spanish Semiconductor Industry Association (AESEMI) to become a collaborating member of the association. Through this agreement, the UPV/EHU will be entitled to enjoy the services and tools of the association, and to actively participate in the development of the activities and initiatives developed by AESEMI.

AESEMI represents the main Spanish companies dedicated to microelectronic design and semiconductor manufacturing. Its objective is to give visibility to all the companies that form part of the semiconductor technology ecosystem in Spain and to promote it nationally and internationally.

For the University of the Basque Country, the interest in participating in AESEMI is above all related to the opportunities for collaboration with companies active in the microelectronics sector (projects, contracts, etc.) and access to both public and private funding, as well as to the promotion of training initiatives and the employment of students in this field (internships and job placements).

The UPV/EHU has several research groups whose lines of work are directly related to microelectronic design and semiconductor manufacturing technologies. With regard to microelectronic design, the lines of research dedicated to the design of reconfigurable and adaptive circuits and System-on-chip (SoC) based on open architectures such as RISC-V, in particular high-speed communications systems with real-time specifications, such as TSN, as well as the design of domain-specific processors for the acceleration of intensive numerical algorithms for machine learning and artificial intelligence, should be highlighted. As a result of their activity, these groups make relevant contributions in fields such as fault-tolerant systems, encryption systems, neuromorphic processing, numerical stability in digital processors, optimisation of power consumption, etc., as well as in the development of tools to aid the design and testing of digital circuits. As regards semiconductor manufacturing processes, the UPV/EHU’s Institute of Microelectronics Technology has a clean room as well as laboratories for the optical and electrical characterisation of devices, and its researchers have extensive experience in the development of photovoltaic technologies.

AESEMI was founded out of the great need to provide the microelectronics sector with its own entity to channel the voice of the industry in a context in which semiconductors have become a strategic asset on which key industries for the European Union depend. Its objective is to give visibility to all the companies and academic and research institutions that form part of the semiconductor technology ecosystem in Spain. Thanks to the work of AESEMI, not only the growth of the industry is boosted, but also a transversal benefit is generated that reverts in our economy and in the commitments of decarbonisation and digitalisation.
