Vodafone Intelligent Solutions Spain, new AESEMI member

The R&D center Vodafone Innovation Hub (Vodafone Intelligent Solutions España (_VOIS)) specialized, among other cutting-edge topics, in chips applied to Open RAN, joins the Spanish Semiconductor Industry Association (AESEMI). This incorporation will help to promote innovation and represents a further step in the unification of the sector.

The Vodafone Innovation Hub R&D center in Malaga is dedicated to the development of new technological solutions and digital services. Among its tasks are the unification of communications, Internet of Things (IoT), Edge computing, Mobile Private Networks (MPN) and Open RAN. In addition, the Open RAN laboratory in Malaga, which is part of this center, carries out R&D activities focused on the development of advanced communications algorithms, the design of IPs for Open RAN and 5G systems and the promotion of the microelectronic ecosystem. Examples include the search for synergies to enable the development of photonic computing to reduce the energy footprint of radio units, the development of ASIC-oriented IPs to advance future Massive MIMO techniques, and the promotion of competition between different processor architectures (x86, RISC-V, etc.) to drive innovation in operator processing nodes. The lab does not pursue product development but rather technology development through collaboration and innovation.

With this collaboration _VOIS expects to expand its contacts in the microelectronic environment, both at industrial and academic level, to increase participation in the design and development of Open RAN systems and the dissemination of innovation generated from Vodafone with the aim of improving product offerings and reducing the environmental cost of telecommunications.

AESEMI, which represents the main Spanish companies dedicated to microelectronic design and semiconductor manufacturing, has among its objectives to promote the sector at national and international level, for which the economic factor is essential. In addition, among its objectives is also to give visibility to all the companies that are part of the Spanish technological ecosystem of semiconductors and microelectronics, as well as to serve as an interlocutor with the rest of the agents.
