AESEMI, the Spanish Semiconductor Industry Association, welcomes the signing of a memorandum of understanding between IMEC and the Spanish Government for the creation of IMEC’s second R&D centre in Spain.

The association welcomes with enthusiasm the news as IMEC is the world’s leading chip research and development institute and has collaborated with companies such as Intel, TSMC and Samsung in the development of new chip technologies, so it will add value across the board to our ecosystem, especially supporting smaller companies to develop prototypes and work with less mature technologies.

This announcement comes on top of other recent announcements such as that of Broadcom, which signals a clear trend in the international attraction of investment and points the way for many more to come. AESEMI especially welcomes IMEC’s announcement because of the special closeness with which we have observed the process, and we thank IMEC for its trust and collaboration during all this time, as well as Danny Moreno, AESEMI’s first president, for his special dedication. We are also at the disposal of other entities interested in investing in Spain to continue supporting them in the same way.

According to Álvaro Pineda, President of AESEMI: “This investment represents a major leap forward for our country, as we are now at the forefront of R&D in the global ecosystem”. “We are delighted to be able to count on IMEC and we encourage them to continue working with the ecosystem, especially with smaller companies and startups, which will see this impact reflected directly.

On the recent creation of the Advisory Council, the Association congratulates the government on the launch of this body, but is concerned that there are no experts from small and medium-sized business environments, to which the vast majority of companies in our country belong. In this regard, we encourage the executive to further develop the Council in order to broaden the representation and to be able to count on personalities from diverse backgrounds.
